Behind The Stall Holders' Table ....

The creative table can be a messy one, some are very neat & tidy, some will swear the mess is really organised chaos. Whatever the surroundings you can be sure more time is spent creating & making than is realised by the buyer. Mass produced items can be churned out cheaply but you will never receive a one-of-a-kind creation passionately handmade with love & care. What the artisan passes on to the buyer of their wares can never be passed on by mass production. Yes, we're rather biased here at The Handmade Show but .... handmade is best......

The artisans' personal touch embodies each item; they're finished in detail, packaged & packed & loaded into the car for delivery to the next market. A note from Cassie - My creative space is small and tucked away in a little corner of my room. Space is limited in my house so I make do with what I have. My next project is actually to install floating shelves to give me more room to work with. I can also be spotted crafting in front of the telly especially if something good is on (although I have poked my finger with my sewing needle one too many times due to that!)

Behind The Stall Table .....

.... sits a creative artisan showcasing their delightful wares. Made by hand and guided by the soul of inspiration these beautifully crafted creations are made with love, pride & care. On the day of the market you get to see the finished product .... before that day what you don't get to see is the artisan at work in their creative corner.

The hours of planning, designing, preparing, detailing, finishing, polishing & packaging all comes together in the array of products you feast your eyes on when browsing through the stalls.

Each person has their own creative table in a corner where the hours are spent & creativity happens. Here are a couple of them .....

Gingerbread Corner

We rarely work on one project at a time because it just seems more economical to do a few project all at once since each batch of gingerbread mix we make can produce about 40-50 standard cookies in various shapes and sizes. When it comes to decorating certain colours like red, black & white will need to be used on most designs so it's easier and faster to work on many projects at the same time. Here you see a picture of our projects in progress, we are working on a pirate themed party for a customer, a tennis range (as we have been inspired by the Australian Open), and our Valentine's Day range for February which consists of a lot of hearts, love birds, kissable lips and scrabble pieces...

Jooce Bath and Body

Hi, my name is Sue and my stall at the Handmade Show is Jooce Bath and Body Products.
I started soap making because I wanted to give my son's grade two teacher a Christmas gift which was personal and unique. There is not much room in our house so I cleared some space on top of one of the bookcases in our hallway to make room to cure the soaps. Since then all the books have been packed away and I have well and truly taken over this area. This photo is of one side of the hallway, the other side is equally as full and the cupboard under the stairs makes a great place to store botanicals and waxes. It might seem a bit strange, but I spend a lot of time in our hallway.

It takes 6-8 weeks to cure olive oil soaps so I was very busy over the Christmas holidays making new batches of soaps in preparation for February's The Handmade Show.

Cafe Handmade 2012

We can't live without the fuel our bodies need to keep us going .... and you won't need to look too far to find a friendly, happy & fun environment to consume some of the nicest treats on offer. Cafe Handmade is still with us (and always will be) at The Handmade Show. The cafe is a THS initiative hosted by the lovely volunteers from Tony's Cafe. Nestled within our indoor market & surrounded by our creative stall holders, it's a sure fire place to be to relax & enjoy the menu.

Tony's Cafe has received a grant from Feed Melbourne - this will go towards the purchase of a van, which will help them collect the food and commodities needed each week to prepare the meals and take home parcels which are given to each guest. All profits made at Cafe Handmade will also go towards funding the van.

At Cafe Handmade your appetite will be wonderfully satisfied in more ways than one. So mark down all our show dates in your diary & include time for brunch, lunch or afternoon tea. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Our first show date for 2012 is Saturday Feb 18th .... and we're well on the way to processing stall applications.

Are you searching for a makers' market to sell your creative wares? The Handmade Show may be just what you're looking for. We're an indoor crafters' & artisans' boutique market and you can read more about our market HERE; if you're interested in applying for a stall you can download the Application Kit HERE;
or, if you're wanting to visit our boutique market all the info on dates, location & times can be found HERE

Stall Applications are open for Feb March & April and are processed in 3 month lots. So if you're thinking of applying for Feb, March or April or all three you'll need to get in quick because places are filling up fast.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THREE HAPPY WINNERS!

Lesley & Ian from Malvern took home the first prize. Our first prize winners enjoyed the show and Cafe Handmade. They managed a few purchases too. Lesley wrote Ian's (hubby) name on some of the raffle tickets when she made her purchases. It was Ian's name that was drawn but both came to pick up their amazing prize.

Liz from Nunawading was the second prize winner. Liz loved the quality of the handmade goods at THS - she was impressed & was very, very happy with the whole show. Liz's friend living in Oakleigh picked up the prize for her as Nunawading was a bit far to come .... but not too far to visit the show. Thank you Liz - what a lovely reward for you.

Sue is very happy with her third prize. Sue was just passing on Sat 10th Dec & had to stop at the traffic lights. She saw The Handmade Show banners & just had to visit us to check out everything. Two hours later Sue continued on her way with a few purchases in hand .... now she has a little gift hamper to add to her handmade goodies.

A Little Treat for Christmas

Easy Rocky Road

1 bag of Nestle melts (milk or dark)

100g raspberry lollies

1 bag marshmallows

75g crushed nuts (optional)

60g copha

Melt chocolate and copha.

Add marshmallows, raspberries and nuts them mix together.

Pour mixture into a slice tin and set in the fridge.

Once set cut into squares or rectangles.

This is great to serve at Christmas parties
or wrap it up and give as a gift.

Something Special About The Cafe

As you all know, The Handmade Show is about all things handmade - Aussie handmade.And we love to have the opportunity to support creative artisans, micro business, hobby business, WAHMs, WAHPs and community.

With our move to a new venue last month we found ourselves with some lovely ladies from St. Anthony's who were happy to take on the task of running Cafe Handmade. This was to be their opportunity to fund raise for various needs and we at THS were excited to hear about the reason for their latest fund raising venture....

A number of people from the parish volunteer each week, on a Thursday night, to run a special cafe called Tony's Cafe. This cafe opens its doors to anyone who needs a good wholesome meal, some companionship, a social evening, a chat & laugh, or a rest from cooking - everyone is welcome. Foods are donated or bought with donation funds & many a great cook has provided a delicious menu, even chefs. People visiting the cafe are treated to a three course meal in a warm & friendly atmosphere. Donations are accepted for meals but only if the patrons are able to donate - no questions asked, no one checking.

The cafe has been operating one night a week for approx 2 years & has recently received a grant from Feed Melbourne to put toward the cafe's great work. This grant is going towards the purchase of a small van with seats, but it won't cover the entire cost. A van would enable the volunteers to do things like give lifts to patrons who may have difficulty getting to & fro Tony's Cafe, food runs and other needs as they arise.

Hence, Cafe Handmade has become a platform for the fundraising efforts of St. Anthony's volunteers for a new little van.... for that special little cafe - All the profits will go towards the purchase of the van.

So come along to our next show & after your shopping rounds, take a seat, rest & tuck into the deliciously irresistible food & mouthwatering treats .... not only will you be supporting the fundraising efforts of a great cause, you'll also be delightfully satisfied.

Have You met...Squiggle and Stitch

Apart from having a gloriously adorable name, Squiggle and Stitch creates and sells the most wonderful homewares for children (not to mention a few very childish adults!). The fabulous Tania who is the creative force behind the label uses the most amazing fabric combinations and leaves you with beautiful items worthy of keeping hold of in the years to come. Take some time to get to now Squiggle and Stitch...

1) Tell us a little bit about Squiggle and Stitch and the items you create.
Squiggle and Stitch is all about Arty Crafty Stuff for Kids. I make decor items and accessories such as cushions, door stops, bags, hair clip holders, and baby tag toys. I like to use fun, bold fabrics and keep things fairly simple. Some of my products can be personalised so they make great gifts. When I'm not sewing or being a mum I'm a teacher so as part of Squiggle and Stitch I also run kids workshops.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?
Most of the time it is the fabric which inspires me. I actually majored in textile design at uni so I have always had a love for gorgeous materials. I love showing fabrics off and playing around with different combinations, cushions are a great way to do this. I will also try and use every bit of a fabric I have because I don't want to waste a beautiful print so the little tag toys I make for babies are made from my fabric scraps.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?
It is vital to my business. I love doing them and it is a great way to network with other stallholders and to meet your customers face to face. I have learnt so much from doing markets and even if you don't sell a lot on the day you are still giving out business cards, getting feedback on your products and talking to other likeminded people. I have had repeat customers and follow up orders from my market stalls and the contacts I have made have been crucial to growing my business.

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?
I would have to say a cushion. (I am obsessed with cushions) Like I said before they are such a great way to show off a fabric that you love and an easy way to brighten up a room.

5) When not at The Handmade Show, where can we find you?
I do other markets in Melbourne including Huckleberry market and Yarraville Markets. You can also find me on facebook at www.facebook.com/squiggleandstitch and I have a store on madeit. www.madeit.com.au/squiggleandstitch I also stock some items at Kids Style Hub in Hawthorn which is a shopping mecca for handmade goodness!

It's time to introduce you to one of our newest stallholders at The Handmade Show - the wonderful Baby Bushka Accessories. Fortunately, Claire has taken the time to answer our Fabulous 5 Questions, so take a couple of minutes to meet our new kid on the block - Baby Bushka.

1) Tell us a little bit about Baby Bushka and the items you create.

I create all sorts of goodies for babies and toddlers - Sun hats, dresses, skirts and shorts. I also make lots of fabric covered button accessories, dribble bibs, dummy ribbons and lots of other little odds and ends.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

It all began when I could not find a sun hat for my then 7 month old daughter and took off from there. I am a self taught sewer who is addicted to fabric so the world of creation is endless really! I find inspiration in my daughter, the fabrics I find and browsing blogs and markets.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?

I love market days! It is always such a fun experience. Most of my sales are through markets and I always hand out lots of business cards, great networking and exposure for my business.

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

One of my favourites is the pencil rolls - a must for any little creative creature, easy to roll up and take with you anywhere a world of colours right at your finger tips!

5) When not at The Handmade Show, where can we find you?

Todays 'Have you Met..' is with the lovely Jacinta from Handmade by Jacinta. Jacinta specialises in creating lovely accessories for both hair and clothing. We were delighted to have Jacinta with us at the July market and we're even more delighted to have her with us again in August. No matter what your age you will find something to either pop in your hair or perhaps wear as a brooch at Handmade by Jacinta.

Take some time and learn a little bit more about Handmade by Jacinta...

1) Tell us a little bit about Handmade by Jacinta and the items you create.

I create hair accessories and brooches for both adults and children out of various fabrics, laces, ribbons, beads, crystals and wires. I particularly enjoy making flowers out of fabrics. The petals and leaves for these flowers are individually hand cut, shaped and sewn, and the flowers are accented with various beads, crystals and pearls.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

My inspiration comes from many different sources, including from viewing other peoples' work, conversations with various people, as well as from the materiels themselves. One of my major sources of inspiration is nature. I have always been fascinated by patterns, colours and shapes from nature, and I try to reflect these in much of my work. I have even been known to use petals from real flowers as a template for petals in the fabric flowers that I create.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?

I really enjoy the markets, particularly discussing my designs and sources of inspiration with customers and other stallholders. I often gain inspiration for different designs, techniques or materials through these conversations.

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

Since each item is unique it is very hard to select just one ...

Outrageously gorgeous! That's the best way to describe the gorgeous children's clothing from Elaine at Ellani Babette Boutique. Elaine describes the clothing as 'Classic, with a twist' and all are made from her own designs. The Handmade Show are very excited to be showcasing her wares and we look forward to seeing little couture clad children leaving the market on Saturday!

Take a little bit of time to learn some more about Elaine and Ellani Babette Boutique...

1) Tell us a little bit about Ellani Babette Boutique and the items you create.

My shop name was derived from my christian name being Elaine, it just seemed a natural thing to do and call my business name Ellani Babette Boutique.The kids clothing I create are my own designs and I personally hand make all of them. I describe my garments as "Classics" with a twist.

I make one offs of my designs in each size,so that they remain unique and exclusive. No repeats are possible.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

I am inspired to create individual designs based on the "Classics" and give them my own tweek of individuality.I have always sewn starting at the age of 10, made my own wedding dress, have made some 60 since then mainly by word of mouth. I decided to start this hobby business after encouragement from my family, after I made creations for the grand children.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?

The markets get my designs known out there. My clients seem to enjoy my clothes, so this is encouraging to keep going, as it is a little difficult being a one man band.

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

One of my hand knitted hats either for males or females.

5) When not at The Handmade Show, where can we find you?

During the day ..... at my sewing machine or at my design table, or at night ......hand knitting at night or embroidering.

Have You Met...Winter Built

The Handmade Show allows us to bring to you some of the most talented crafters in Victoria - and August is no exception! This month we are very pleased to intoduce you to Megan and her wonderful shop - Winter Built.

Winter Built bring to the market wonderful handcrafted items made of timber; items made from Australian Hardwood that is undersized, rejected, or no longer required from a local manufacturer. Their aim is to never waste any of the timber that they source.

And did we tell you this is Winter Built's first market? Make sure you pop in and say hello to Megan :0)

So sit back and enjoy learning a little bit more about the beautiful world of Winter Built...

1) Tell us a little bit about Winter Built and the items you create.

My husband and I live in the Outer Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. My husband is a furniture builder by trade, and I enjoy working with him on weekends to create our own special projects.

I call him a hoarder, he thinks he is prepared for anything, but together we agree that we should never be wasteful. We have more pallets of timber than you can poke a stick at and this is where the idea began.

We start off by designing larger items using the materials we have available. The offcuts from these then go to produce our smaller items. Eventually what we have left is nothing short of Saw Dust, which we use to keep our lovely chickens living in comfort.

So far our items include, Wedding Wishing Wells, Dvd Units, Chopping Boards, Coaster Sets, Candle Holders with plenty more on the way.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

Our ideas come from what we have available to us. Depending on the sizes and lengths of the timber depends on what we build.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?
As August 20th will be our very first market, we are hoping to get our creations out and seen by the local community. I am already planning on doing much, much more in the future.

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

Definately a Hardwood Chopping Board - the timber looks absolutely beautiful!

5) When not at The Handmade Show, where can we find you?

We are hoping to be a more markets in the future, but for now we can also be found on Facebook. Come and say Hi to us at Winter Built.

One of our fabulous regulars is the wonderful Elena of EP Designs. Elana's artful enhancements of ordinary items really do need to be seen to be believed. Her artwork is soft and subtle - it has a true shabby-chic feel to it and would look lovely with many different styles of interior décor.

1) Tell us a little bit about EP Designs and the items you create.

The tag line on the EP Designs logo is - A World of New and Recreated Treasures - This sums up what EP Designs is delving into - creating or recreating pieces into new treasures. It’s about seeing the beauty in old or discarded items & recreating them into a new creation, something that is inspiring, decorative and beautiful.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

Just fossicking through op shops or recycling yards gets the imagination going. Visiting antique and home ware stores does the same thing for me – love it! But anything from flicking through interior décor magazines, walking into an art supply store, picking up a vintage tea cup or going to a quaint cafe, can inspire my colour schemes and designs and even what a piece will be recreated into.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?

The Handmade Show is the only market I do so it provides an avenue for people to see my work in the flesh and create awareness of EP Designs. It provides me with face to face contact with customers and the opportunity to chat about my work. Feedback is important too as it helps to me to make changes or improvements. I also love the opportunity I have to meet other creative people.

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

Just about everyone loves treasure so whether new, old or recreated, treasures are especially nice to own. So, it’s whatever each person would see as a treasure…. But to choose something then I’d have to say a candelabra – it’s not just decorative but a useful piece for holding elegant candles which help create a warm, cosy ambience in any room.

We are very excited to have another talented glass artist with us this Saturday. The fabulous Gill from Artopia Glassworks will be joining us with her gorgeous contemporary glass art. Fabulous colours, tremendous shapes - all beautiful, and in our opinion, very necessary for your home!

Enjoy our little insight into the world of Artopia Glass...

1) Tell us a little bit about Artopia Glassworks and the items you create.

Artopia Glassworks produces handmade, unique, functional and art glass pieces. Each piece of glass is carefully cut and put together, it is then fired to fuse it and then slumped into or over a mold to shape it.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

I am inspired by the beautiful colours of the glass and the way it flows when hot. I also do patchwork and quilting and find that although I use an entirely different medium, the process is similar - cutting, piecing, fixing together!

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?

I love the market atmosphere, where there are so many very talented, artistic people who encourage and inspire me to achieve more.

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

I thing everyone should have a 'Splash Dish' in their home - it can be quite functional, but is unique and beautiful in its simplicity!

5) When not at The Handmade Show, where can we find you?

When I am not at The Handmade Show I am working in my studio creating more things to share with you at The Handmade Show!

Red Letter Studio

1) Tell us a little bit about Red Letter Studio and the items you create.

Red Letter Studio is an exclusive boutique design studio based in Melbourne, Australia. We specialise in unique stationery and invites, and we have great fun providing a personalised service to create custom graphic design that's just right for you.

Not only do we have a range of ready-to-go stationery, we also offer complete event stationery sets (everything from the invite to the thank you cards – the whole caboodle), logo design and brand development, blog and online profile design. But at The Handmade Show we sell a range of cards, art prints, letter writing sets and other goodies.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

I find inspiration everywhere - in my day-to-day life, trawling great design sites and blogs online, looking at books and mags. Colour, the weather, what kind of food I am eating today! All sorts of places. Plus my design and art peers, and what projects my crafty buddies are up to.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?

Being involved in a market creates a lot more awareness for my brand, and gets my work out there. It's also really interesting to see which designs sell the most - often my favourite designs sit at the bottom of the stack and its other designs that I might not love as much that are popular!

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

A stash of blank greeting cards is pretty important to me - I am always sending snail mail love to someone and I have the biggest stash of cards. My only problem is parting with them - some of them are so beautiful!

Have You Met...Ruby Louise

One of our favourite The Handmade Show regulars is the lovely Kathleen from Ruby Louise. Ruby Louise carries a fabulous range of jewellery and accessories that suit girls of any age! Fun and girly to wear, yet elegant in design - surely everyone should have a piece (or two or three!) of Ruby Louise to wear!

1) Tell us a little bit about Ruby Louise and the items you create.

I was a metalwork major at Melbourne Uni (part of a teaching degree), and had not done much creative work since graduating many years ago, apart from making presents for friends and family. Around 18 months ago after much encouragement from my husband and friends I started Ruby Louise. It started by selling on Facebook first, then I built a Big Cartel website, and in December last year I started doing markets, with the Handmade Show being my first one.

I like to create pieces using lots of different mediums including Swarovski crystals & pearls, Polymer Clay, Lace, Felt and base metals. It can be anything from a small resin flower stud, to a hand stamped Polymer clay piece, to a Lace applique made into a necklace.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

I am mainly inspired by nature and natural forms, and also vintage. I am obsessed with flowers and they feature heavily in my work in many different mediums. I love birds, trees, butterflies, leaves and various other forms of nature. I also really love lace, and have just started making a range of polymer clay pieces featuring lace patterns, as well as lace applique necklaces. I tend not to follow a particular look though, which makes my work quite diverse. It is definitely feminine, as I am quite a girly girl. All the pieces I make are ones I would wear myself, so a lot of love goes into every piece.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?

It's one of the best ways to reach members of the public and is an opportunity to gain valuable feedback about your products. It's a great tool for meeting other creative people as well. I have met so many lovely sellers and have developed a wonderful network of friends who are creative. It is an excellent way to reach buyers who appreciate handmade items instead of mass produced unoriginal designs.

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

Definitely my resin flower studs. They come in a huge range of colours so there is a pair to match every outfit.

5) When not at The Handmade Show, where can we find you?

Monthly at Yarraville markets, and periodically at Take 2, South Yarra Market, Round She Goes. Also through my website www.rubylouise.com.

Have You Met...Luana's Bead Jewellery

We are very excited to introduce the lovely Luana from Luana's Bead Jewellery to you. Luana's pieces are as individual as they are beautiful and we hope you come ans see them for yourself at our June market.

1) Tell us a little bit about Luana's Bead Jewellery and the items you create.

"Luana's Bead Jewellery" has grown from a hobby which began 5yrs ago, to something I am quite addicted to. I enjoy making bracelets the most.

Whenever I buy a new special outfit, I love going into my workroom and being able to make myself a matching set of jewels.

I don't think I've wandered into a bead store without buying something. I find the stunning glass beads, pearls and semi-precious stones hard to resist, such gorgeous colours and shapes nowadays.

I try and make pieces that are appealing to a wide range of ages and style tastes, but primarily always using quality glass beads, pearls and semi-precious stones.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

I try to keep a watchful eye on the current seasons fashion shades, by visiting department stores and clothing shops, so that I make pieces that will compliment

your wardrobe, for work, home and beyond. Sometimes it's just a case of coming across a stunnning strand of beautiful beads that I buy first, and work out a design later.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?

Craft markets are the main source of business to promote my pieces, and generate sales. Being able to view the designs in person is so much better than viewing a photo on a webpage, as you get to feel and try on the pieces and see their gorgeous colours and sparkles.

Also, I've found word of mouth from the markets to be very helpful, such as being asked to appear 'on request' at additional markets is so flattering and exciting.

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

I don't think you can go wrong with a pair of silver ball earrings, which are simple yet versatile, or a gorgeous glass pearl bracelet which you can just slip on to dress up an outfit.

5) When not at The Handmade Show, where can we find you?

Probably best fo follow my Facebook page "Luana's Bead Jewellery", as I go to a variety of markets around the south east / bayside suburbs of Melbourne.

Amy is the terrific owner of Ladybugs & Daisychains. Apart from having the cutest shop name, Amy specialises in beautiful stationery and accessories, and has recently introduced fabric note boards into her line. We hope you enjoy our little visit into her world :0)

1) Tell us a little bit about Ladybugs & Daisychains and the items you create.

Ladybugs & Daisychains was created when I started selling my handmade cards. It then led to creating other stationery items such as notebooks, gift cards, invitations and bookmarks. At the beginning of this year I started making coin purses, phone pouches and fabric note boards. With all the amazing papers, materials and stamps/inks out there the creativity is endless.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

So many different things inspire me; different papers, materials, colours, magazines, markets and all things crafty.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?

I love going to the market. Its great to meet the people who like and appreciate what you do whether they are a customer on the day or at another date. It's also fun mixing with other talented people who have a similar passion.

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

At the moment I'm loving my phone pouch. Definitely a must.

Have You Met...Studio Sylvia

We're getting closer to our next market (21 May) - so it's time to tempt you with the talents of another of our May stallholders. Todays interview is with the fantastic Sylvia of Studio Sylvia.

1. Tell us a little about Studio Sylvia and the items you create?

I love earrings but I couldn’t find unique earrings that were different from the usual. I don’t favour production line jewellery after on one particular occasion, I attended a function where another guest was wearing the exact style of earrings. I decided then, to make my own, after which, I would receive complements on the earrings I was wearing and be asked where I had purchased them. Hence, Studio Sylvia was born.

My daughter gave me a beautiful necklace for my birthday. My further surprise was that she had made the necklace herself. I truly thought she had purchased it. So Studio Sylvia is now a joint venture, offering unique, handmade jewellery.

We combine our own handmade components made from Precious Metal Clay fine silver, sterling silver, enamelled copper and purchased components – beads, crystals, Sterling Silver elements. For example, our bracelets combine beads and a handmade fine silver charm. We make one-off pieces and no two items are exactly the same. Customers are assured that our pieces are individually unique.

2. Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

Beautiful objects, nature’s colour schemes, Art Deco style and fashion trends all provide inspiration for design. A walk in the park, a stroll along the sand can lodge a point interest, that will evolve in a design. Inspiration also comes, when shopping for supplies, i.e. beads and chain, as items will suggest designs/ideas.

3. How does the market experience contribute to your business?

The Handmade Show provides an opportunity to bring our designs to the public in a companionable and welcoming environment. It also allows us to engage with customers, getting feedback and ideas for future designs.

4. Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

Of course either a pair of earrings or a necklace, to complete an outfit. A staple statement piece, with neutral tones that will go with everything. Colour is great, but neutral is extremely easy and versatile.

5. When not at The Handmade Show, where can we find you?

Another of our wonderful Handmade Show stall holders is the fabulous Athena - also known as Ali-Kat Creations. Athena's jewelery features lovely, sparkly Swarovski Crystals and her pieces will certainly catch your eye.

So sit back, relax, and let us introduce you to Ali-Kat Creations :0)

1. Tell us a little about Ali-Kat Creations and the items you create?

Ali-Kat creations creates boutique, modern, classy and affordable jewellery pieces mainly with Swarovski crystals and semi-precious gemstones.

I have recently also started a bridal range which includes Greek orthodox wedding crowns (Stefana). These are also popular as they are affordable and made from Swarovski crystals as opposed to most out there that are made from glass or plastic.
Ali-Kat creations started out using more inferior crystals and beads and found that no bead really shines quite like the Swarovski brand. The pieces are sometimes delicate, but very elegant and noticeable.

I love to use unusual colours where I can so as to differentiate my goods from others. Recently I tried using a lovely blue/green colour which just took my breath away when I saw it, and the piece was instantly a hit.

Ali-Kat creations started because I just love creating things for myself and found that every time I wore one of my pieces someone would want it and ask me where they could get them from. So I thought why not share my love of beading and jewellery with everyone.

2. Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

I generally get inspired by fashion, but more likely the beads and materials themselves. Sometimes I find a crystal or centrepiece that is so pretty that I think to myself, this is beautiful, what can I make with it?
I like to check out the industry magazines also and get inspired by some masters of jewellery making out there. Everyone is very helpful in this industry.

I have also recently started using semi-precious gemstones (black onyx, rose quartz and lapis lazuli) in my wire work pieces. If I find a stone I like, I can usually visualise what I want to make with it. So sometimes I just love the piece and really just want to do something with it.

It is therefore true that a lot of my items are really one of a kind and with the rings, I cannot make exact pieces again. This is the beauty of handmade, it means you can really create something custom made :)

3. How does the market experience contribute to your business?

The market experience is a great way to promote your business to people you would otherwise not see or who may not know about you online. As I am a relatively new business, small and mostly an online one, then it is important for customers to see my goods in the "flesh" so that they can feel comfortable about buying online.

I often get comments that the photos we take of our goods and place online don't do justice to the detailed work we do, because you really cant see it in a photo. I have also had comments from customers that you really cant see the sparkle and shine as well on the Internet as much as what you can see it in real life.

So the market experience lets me show how wonderful these crystals, beads and stones really are.

4. Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

Everyone loves the Ali-Kat Creations vintage polymer rose rings (see photo) or the Swarovski bead rings. This a ring that has had me come runner up in a bead supplier competition and is a hit with all my customers.
My Swarovski and semi-precious gemstone pendants are also very popular.

Cafe lovers will understand when I say things like, "Mmm, love that aroma of brewing coffee wafting past", or, "Those cakes look too tempting to pass up". Well, our tiny little set up is slowly rising up to the occasion. Do we really need an excuse to sit down to tea & scones or coffee & cupcakes? I know that I don't.

Our very own Kerri of Vintage Sew and So brews up a delicious cuppa and we've had stall holders who have baked delicious treats for us to purchase & enjoy with our coffee. So when you visit us at The Handmade Show you will be able to enjoy, not just the creative wares handcrafted by our gifted stall holders, but also delicious treats to "Mmmm" over with your cuppa. All this in a warm, friendy, cozy little boutique market space with amiable music to set the mood.

Here at The Handmade Show we are surrounded by so many talented artists and crafters that we thought it was about time that we introduced them to you. Get a little bit personal as it were!

The first of our wonderful 'Handmaders' is the fabulous Rachel from Bellissima Glass. We hope that these interviews give you a chance to get to know our stall holders a little better and entice you to come and visit them at our next show :0)

1) Tell us a little bit about Bellissima Glass and the items you create.

Bellissima Glass is my baby. It's where I get to have some time to be me, not the Mummy me. I create one of a kind glass fused jewellery and gifts, all in my little workspace (the back of the garage!!). I make pieces that I would like to wear, one of a kind wearable art. Most popularly rings, pendants and earrings.

2) Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

My inspiration comes from all kinds of places, but mostly from the glass itself. The glass might look a certain way which can lend itself to being made into a certain piece.

3) How does the market experience contribute to your business?

The market experience completes my business. It is the greatest way to showcase my wears, as glass can be very tricky to photograph as it reacts differently in different lights. People really need to see what products look like in real life!

4) Which one of your items should everyone have in their home?

Everyone should for sure own a Bellissima Glass ring. They have to be my favourite pieces. A talking point and piece of Art you can wear with any outfit!

We can't wait to meet our new artists coming to join some of our all-time favourite exhibitors this Sunday! The Tastes of Oakleigh Festival will be on next door in the park where you will find Creations by Bobbie Mac's stall, along with food from lots of different cultures, roving performers, musicians and entertainment for the kidlets.

Inside the RSL from 11 until 3.30, you can check out the latest offerings from our local artists, including homewares, accessories, stationery, kids goodies, jewellery - and even CUPCAKES!! yup, we got cupcakes and goodies from Happy Little Tummies and espresso available, so pop by to check out some of the most recent additions to Melbourne's crafters scene and grab a coffee and a treat while you're there!!
